Choosing the Right Djembe Drums

How to choose the right size djembe drum is a common question. A general rule of thumb is that the smaller the person, the smaller the drum size. Models can come in 7″, 9″, 10″, 12″, and 14″ sizes. These numbers refer to the size of the drum head. For children up to about six years old, a 7″ djembe is a good choice. For ages seven to eleven, the 9″ size works well. A small adult would do best with a 10″ djembe. The most common size for an average height adult is 12″. The 14″ djembe drum size would most comfortably fit players over six feet tall that need a taller drum and who also want more volume and deeper bass tone.

Proper Djembe Drum Positioning

For quick reference, here are the height measurements for the different djembes. The first number refers to the head size, the second number refers to the height of the drum: 7″x12″, 9″x16″, 10″x20″, 12″x24″, 14″x26″. The proper body position for playing the African djembe drum is to sit with the drum between your legs, tilted forward, with its base resting on the floor. The head of the drum should be about 3″ above your thighs. The goal is to have your hands fit comfortably on the drum head with the rest of the drum feeling comfortable as well. Of all the African drums, the djembe is the most popular.
